‘A nightmare’: Neville reacts to Mane’s display in Liverpool FC’s 2-1 win over Spurs
Gary Neville felt Sadio Mane was one of the driving forces behind Liverpool FC’s 2-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield on Sunday evening.
The Senegal international has been a key part of Liverpool FC’s title challenge so far this term after scoring five times in nine Premier League games before the visit of Spurs.
However, it was another seasoned Premier League goal-scorer, Harry Kane, who broke the deadlock at Anfield inside 60 seconds when he managed to guide a header into the net after Son Heung-min’s shot hit the crossbar.
Liverpool FC responded emphatically and put the Tottenham goal under relentless pressure but Mane missed arguably the home side’s best chance in the first half.
Jordan Henderson equalised for the league leaders within seven minutes of the second half before Mane won a 75th-minute penalty when Serge Aurier brought down the African star.
His strike partner Mohamed Salah made no mistake from the penalty spot to secure three points for the hosts and restore their six-point lead at the top of the table.
Former Manchester United defender Neville singled out Mane for man of the match after his influential performance in the first half.
“Mane has been a huge threat,” Neville told Sky Sports.
“He won the penalty. He has been a nightmare for Spurs.”
On Salah’s winning penalty, Neville added: “He smashes it. He doesn’t quite get the contact he wants, but there’s no movement from the goalkeeper.”
Mane won three aerial challengers, had two shots on target and finished with 82 per cent pass completion in a versatile performance from the home side.
The Senegal forward moved to Liverpool FC in a £34m deal from Southampton in the 2016 summer transfer window.
Liverpool FC will make the trip to Aston Villa in their next Premier League fixture on Saturday.
