Treadwell: We live for these sorts of days
There are undoubtedly few who enjoyed Friday night’s win over Harlequins more than Kieran Treadwell.
For Treadwell, it was a trip back to familiar territory for the man who joined Ulster from ‘Quins in the summer of 2016.
“It’s always a little bit strange coming up against friends, but it’s also fun and we got the job done and took the five points so we’re very happy with that.”
Friday’s game was the fourth time that Treadwell has came up against his former side, and he has been on the winning side on each occasion. His previous return trip to The Stoop in December 2017 was probably more memorable for the weather than the quality of rugby fare, as Treadwell recalls:
“The last time we were here, the conditions were very difficult with the snow, but for the majority of the game tonight the weather was fine so we were able to put a few more plays together and it was a good performance from the lads.”
Despite the wide margin on the scoreline at full time, it took Ulster some time to hit their stride, with the home side providing staunch resistance.
“Quins are a good outfit, a physical side, and they really fronted up. It was tough to break them down in the first half, but we upped our game in the second half and took it to them, which is what we needed to do. We knew there was plenty of room for improvement after last week’s game, and I think we saw that in large parts of the second half.”
The all-important bonus point try came four minutes from time, courtesy of a rapid counter-attack finished off by Matt Faddes, with the extra point strengthening Ulster’s place at the top of Pool 3.
“We definitely thought it (the bonus point) was on. We go out and try to get the maximum points every game, and now we’re in pole position in the group, so we’re obviously delighted with that.”
“There’s a great camaraderie within the team and we live for these sorts of days.”
“We’ve managed to get ourselves into a great position after four rounds, but there are still two big tasks ahead to make sure we book a place in the quarter-finals.”
