Publisher Rogue Games is bringing back PlayStation's classic racing franchise WipEout in the form of WipEout Rush, a mobile racing title set to release in 2022. Wipeout first hit the scene in 1995 as a futuristic racing game wherein players piloted anti-gravity ships. The last entry in the series, Wipeout 2048, launched in 2012 for PlayStation Vita; unfortunately, developer Studio Liverpool shut its doors several months after the handheld title's launch.
Apart from the rollout of Wipeout Omega Collection in 2012, the high-octane brand has remained dormant for nearly a decade. That changes in early 2022, however, when Rogue Games publishes Wipeout Rush on Android and iOS devices. Speaking to IGN, company CEO Matt Casamassina said that while this isn't the visceral console experience fans long for, Rogue managed to "rethink wipEout for mobile with some fun new play mechanics and gorgeous visuals." He hopes fans approach the title with an open mind since it will feature iconic ships, familiar tracks, an electronica soundtrack, and a "new comic-book inspired narrative." In addition to a single-player mode set across 12 championship cups in five environments, Wipeout Rush will boast 60 ships from the original series.
The like to dislike ratio on the above announcement trailer indicates Wipeout fans aren't pleased with the news. Still, such a move seems in line with PlayStation's renewed interest in the mobile market. How the brand's mobile initiative will continue to manifest currently remains to be seen.
