PlayStation State Of Play (October 2021): Game Announcements & Predictions
A new PlayStation State of Play event is on the horizon, and there's speculation about what games could be receiving new trailers/information during the presentation. Sony likes to keep PlayStation owners excited about their upcoming games, using presentations like State of Plays and PlayStation Showcase events throughout the year to showcase the future of PlayStation games. This week will feature a brand new State of Play presentation that is sure to hype up PS4/PS5 owners.
PlayStation's newest State of Play event is taking place on October 27 at 2 pm PST/ 5 pm EST/ 11 pm CEST. The event is set to last around 20 minutes, and will be giving updates on previously shown third-party games and new announcements from Sony partners all around the world. Fans will be able to check out the presentation on PlayStation's official Twitch and YouTube channels, as well as other video game outlets that are covering the State of Play event.
Although PlayStation detailed that the event would focus on upcoming third-party releases instead of PlayStation Studio titles, ruling out Bluepoint announcements, only one game has been announced that will feature into the State of Play presentation. This has left many speculating about what triple A and indie games could make an appearance on Wednesday, especially those that haven't received any announcements in a quite some time. These are some of the third-party games that seem likely to appear during the newest State of Play on Wednesday.
Little Devil Inside was first shown during the PS5 reveal event in June 2020, and is the first game from developer Neostream Interactive. The game wowed with its unique visuals and gameplay elements, seemingly placing players in the role of a mercenary hired by an professor to track down and study a host of different paranormal threats in a semi-open world. Aside from the initial trailer, not a thing has been seen about Little Devil Inside to give any indication about the game's future release. It looks like the new State of Play will be the place to be for those looking for an update, as PlayStation has revealed that fans would be getting their first in-depth look at the indie title. Hopefully Neostream will announce a release date for Little Devil Inside as well, but the fact that new content is finally being shown for the game is a positive in itself.
Information about Square Enix's upcoming Final Fantasy 16 has been very scarce, with nothing being revealed about the game since it was first announced in 2020 prior to the release of the PlayStation 5. Final Fantasy 16's announcement trailer established the title as a timed PlayStation 5 console exclusive, and was followed up by a website from Square Enix that provided more details about the Final Fantasy 16 characters and world that will feature into the game. No other trailers or concrete updates have been released about the game since, with the developers opting to skip E3 and the large September PlayStation Showcase due to a commitment to hold off on showing any trailers until Final Fantasy 16 is close to release. The time may be now for Square Enix to show off the upcoming game, and Wednesday's State of Play event would be a perfect opportunity.
The Lord of the Rings: Gollum was originally announced in March of 2019. Developed by Daedalic Entertainment, Gollum places players into the role of the iconic Tolkien character. Daedalic's partnership with Middle-earth Enterprises means that the game will draw from the Lord of the Rings books instead of the movies, and gameplay trailers have indicated that the story will follow Gollum during his time as a slave beneath the Dark Tower and his interactions with the Elves of Mirkwood. The Lord of the Rings: Gollum was originally set for a 2021 release, but a trailer from July 2021 announced that it would be pushed back to fall 2022. The State of Play event could be the perfect place for Daedalic to showcase more of the game and potentially give a firmer release date.
Developed by Avalanche Studios, Hogwarts Legacy is the open-world wizard adventure that Harry Potter fans have been waiting on for quite some time. The game was originally shown during the same PlayStation event where Final Fantasy 16 was revealed in 2020, showing how the new game will be an adventure that moves away from the Harry Potter story and tells a completely different tale set at Hogwarts in the 1800s. No further details for the game have been shown since this PlayStation Showcase, with the game remaining absent during E3 2021 and Gamescom 2021.
Rumors that Hogwarts Legacy could be appearing during Wednesday’s State of Play event have been circulating through the gaming community after reputable leaker Millie A tweeted early in October that new information about the game could be showing up in October or during December’s Game Awards. They later added in a follow-up tweet that they “so badly wanted to say State of Play, but couldn’t” during the original tweet, further setting up the possibility for Hogwarts Legacy’s involvement in the presentation.
Revealed back in June 2020 as Project Athia, the mystical Forspoken is being developed by Luminous Productions, a studio created by some of the development team responsible for Final Fantasy 15. The game received a name update during March of 2021, and a story trailer for Forspoken was shown during September's PlayStation Showcase that highlighted protagonist Frey Holland's adventure into the strange world of Athia and some of the magical gameplay elements it would be comprised of. The PS5 exclusive is set to release during Spring of 2022, so there's a good chance that more details about Forspoken could be shown during the State of Play event.
The newest entry in the long-running FPS franchise, Call of Duty: Vanguard is Sledgehammer Games' latest foray back into the World War II setting that many Call of Duty games have explored before. PlayStation and Call of Duty have had an exclusive deal over the past couple years, allowing PlayStation owners to experience select content before Xbox and PC players. It's a fair assumption that the State of Play event could showcase some Vanguard footage to get fans excited for the upcoming release during the first week of November.
Outside of the confirmed Little Devil Inside appearance, any of these games showing up during PlayStation's State of Play event is purely speculation. PlayStation may have other plans for games coming up in the very near future, like the Grand Theft Auto Trilogy: Definitive Edition in November or December's Among Us release. There are a lot of options for PlayStation's State of Play to choose from, and fans should definitely tune in on October 27 to see what the future holds.
