Pakistan-Afghanistan border crossing shut after brief reopening
Pakistan closed a crucial border crossing with Afghanistan. The official said this is the most recent development in the contentious closure of the Torkham crossing border, which began earlier this week.
The Director of the Pakistan-Afghanistan Joint Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Ziaul Haq Sarhadi, said Pakistan could not make the border crossing “completely functioning due to administrative issues”.
The media centre in Afghanistan’s Nangarhar Province posted on Twitter that “the Torkham gate has been closed by the Pakistani side after it was opened ‘yesterday’ by the officials of the Islamic Emirate.”
Earlier this week, the Taliban administration in Afghanistan closed the Torkham gate between Afghanistan and Pakistan, accusing Islamabad of breaching its commitments.
The closure of the Torkham gate came after an exchange of fire occurred on Monday, a day after the Pakistani troops did not allow the movement of Afghan patients for medical purposes while Pakistan failure to pledge that it would allow the Afghan patients without valid travel documents.
Following the exchange of fire between Afghan and Pakistani troops, a high Pakistani delegation came to Kabul to discuss the issues regarding security, ISIS and TTP militants.
According to the Afghan Taliban government, the Pakistani delegation was informed during the meeting on Wednesday that it was Pakistan’s responsibility to provide all “necessary facilities” for travellers at Torkham and another crossing farther south, Spin Boldak, as well as unique facilities for the transportation of patients in need of emergency medical care.
Even though the Pakistani side promised to resolve the problems as soon as possible, they closed after the Torkham gate had only briefly been opened
