Telegram is one of the most popular of those such apps.

Telegram lets you share messages with people without needing the person's phone number, meaning it's different from many of the other apps. It is a cross-platform app that offers enhanced security features, allows you to set up large messaging groups, and isn't affiliated with other social media companies like how WhatsApp is owned by Meta.

There are private and public groups or channels you can join and interact with on Telegram. It allows people to get caught up on conversations and discuss important matters. Telegram groups can hold up to 200,000 people. How can you find and join these groups? Here's how.

What's the difference between Telegram groups and channels?

Telegram allows its users to join various groups and channels of their choice for a lot of purposes. You can also make your own group or channels and keep them private or make them public. There are plenty of topics you can learn about or follow on Telegram.

Telegram channels can have an unlimited number of users while the Admin is the only person who can communicate with the channel members. You can't interact with other users in channels. If you're a member of a channel, you're known as a subscriber.

If you're a member of a group, you can communicate with other group members. These tend to be for groups of friends or families. You can send all kinds of messages, like pictures, videos, gifs, texts, voice notes, documents, and more. You can have up to 200,000 members in a group.

Telegram groups also tell you the number of members online, which isn't available in channels because you won't get to interact with them anyway.

Private groups on Telegram

Some groups are private and can only be joined if you receive an invite link. You can also be invited by the admin. You won't be able to search for private groups in the search bar.

Public groups on Telegram

You are able to join groups that are public by searching for them in the search bar. Type in an interest of yours, and it will bring up both channels and groups that are about that topic.

How to find groups on Telegram

There are various ways one can find and join groups on Telegram. As we mentioned, the easiest is to be invited with a link. You can get the invitation link in two ways:

1. A member of the group can send you the link. The link starts with "t.me" and clicking it will send you to the group and allow you to click Join Group.
2. Many groups have an individual channel, meaning it's for the public. You can search for the group and join it.

How to find Telegram groups on your phone

Download the Telegram app on your phone. For both Android and iPhones, the process for finding groups works the same way.

1. Open the app and choose the search magnifying glass in Chats.
2. Enter the group name or a keyword related to the group you want to join. Choose one that is what you're looking for. This will take you into the chat. You can click Join at the bottom to join.
3. You can now type a message and maybe introduce yourself to other members.

How to find Nearby Groups in Telegram?

The "People Nearby" feature is not turned on when you download the Telegram app. You must turn it on before you are able to use it.

1. Click on the menu button.
2. .Next, select the “People Nearby" option
3. All local Telegram groups near you will be displayed. It should be noted that local people will be able to see that you're using the app currently.

How to exit a Telegram group

You can always exit a group at any point.

1. Launch the app on your smartphone device and click on the group you wish to exit.
2. Click on the triple dot in the top right corner and click Leave Channel.
3. Click "Leave Channel" (to exit a channel) or "Delete and leave group" (to exit a Telegram group).
