I’m a dog trainer & here are the worst guard dog breeds – they’re lazy & wouldn’t even move if someone tried to break in
A DOG trainer has revealed the three dog breeds that would make the worst guard dogs.
Will Atherton explained that there are many different reasons people get dogs, with one of the most common reasons being to “look after you, your home and your family.”
However, he warns that are definitely some breeds that are much better for this task and some that are much worse.
In a clip shared to TikTok (@iamwillatherton), he kicks off the list of “terrible guard dogs” with the Pug.
“Although they can be quite yappy at strangers, there’s not much really that they’re actually going to do if somebody is going to try and break into your home or cause you and your family any harm,” he says.
Next up is the Greyhound.
“Yes people have this image of them being super athletic and very fast from their racing origins however, they’re incredibly lazy dogs, incredibly mellow and incredibly quiet.
“And if somebody breaks into your house, they’re probably not even going to get out of bed to see what’s going on.”

The dog whizz then moves onto the Golden Retriever.
“Now they probably will get out of bed if someone break into your house, but they’ll be wagging their tail to meet the intruder and then show them wherever your prized possessions are…even if it just earns a rub behind the ear,” he says.
It wasn’t long before the post went viral, garnering thousands of views and several comments from pet owners up and down the country.
“We used to joke that one of our golden retrievers that passed away would hold the flash light for the robbers,” joked one.
A second noted: “I would 100% put the Staffy on that list.”
A third joked: “A Greyhound might get grumpy if the burglar tries to steal their couch.”
Meanwhile, a fourth wrote: “Omg I have a pug! 100% agreed.”
Another penned: “Honourable mention to Siberian husky – we had someone break in and she just followed them around with her rope toy.”
And a further added: “Was waiting for Golden Retrievers – they are very quick to react to a cheese rapper though.”
