CHATSWORTH — JSerra football was driving with seconds left in the fourth quarter. It had reached the 40-yard line when Sierra Canyon made its final and perhaps biggest defensive stop of the game on Friday night.
Freshman Richard Wesley charged forth for a tackle for a loss of 7 yards, stopping the Lions with seconds left in the game to help Sierra Canyon win, 9-7, in its season opener at home.
“I knew it was the last play so had to give it everything I got,” Wesley said. “Our defense is unstoppable. I don’t think anybody in the conference can beat our defense.”
Wyatt Becker threw Sierra Canyon’s only touchdown of the night and was 14-for-16 passing for 189 yards and one interception. Running back Dane Dunn had 17 carries for 74 yards.
Sierra Canyon’s defense found steady legs early in the game, throttling JSerra’s ground game and forcing quarterback Michael Tollefson to scramble.
The Trailblazers were unable to score on their first possession, with the Lions’ Madden Faraimo sacking quarterback Wyatt Becker and forcing Sierra Canyon to punt. But it was Sierra Canyon’s defense that got the first points on the board, forcing JSerra to a bad snap over the punter’s head for a safety with 6:55 left in the first quarter.
Carnell Ferguson sacked Tollefson at the start of the second quarter and JSerra punted on its first possession of the frame.
“We basically knew everything they were going to do,” Wesley said. “There were no surprises. I’m just glad that we got the win.”
When the Trailblazers got the ball, Becker threw a 21-yard pass to Kwazi Gilmer. Becker connected with Cameron Mitchell later in the drive for a 15-yard touchdown for a 9-0 lead with 7:35 until the break.
JSerra’s field goal attempt went wide left, and the Trailblazers preserved their lead going into halftime. The Lions prevented a shutout shortly into the third quarter when Tollefson threw a 32-yard touchdown pass to Axel Olander to bring the score to 9-7.
Wesley sacked Tollefson for a loss of 4 yards later in the quarter to swing the momentum back in the Trailblazers’ favor, then Becker threw a 44-yard pass to Jae’on Young on their ensuing possession. Sierra Canyon got into field goal range, but missed on a 40-yard attempt.
Kale Webb intercepted Becker early in the fourth quarter, but again Sierra Canyon’s defense came up with a big stop. This time, Mikhal Johnson sacked Tollefson and Madden Riorden had a pass breakup after that with 8:25 left in the game.
Sierra Canyon next heads to Oaks Christian on Friday for its second game of the season.
