Map shows where Storm Ciarán ‘danger to life’ wind warnings will be in place
Storm Ciarán is bearing relentlessly down on the UK, as some parts of the country continue to recover from Storm Babet less than two weeks ago.
The threat from the grim weather is severe enough for the Met Office to have issued a pair of amber ‘danger to life’ warnings for wind along the entire south coast of England.
But it’s not just that area that’s affected – the north coasts of Cornwall and Devon and a slither of coastal Pembrokeshire are covered by one of the warnings, while eastern Essex falls inside the other.
Take a look at our map below to get a better idea of the regions that could be in for a very windy Thursday, with gusts possibly reaching up to 90mph.
The Met Office has said that people covered by the western amber warning, which is in effect from 3am to 1pm tomorrow, should be aware that Storm Ciarán could ‘disrupt travel, utilities, and cause some structural damage’.
‘Very strong northwesterly winds’ could blow the roofs off houses and bring down trees or power lines, the weather agency warns.
In coastal areas, there could be particularly large waves, with the added hazard of ‘beach material being thrown onto sea fronts, coastal roads and properties’
The eastern amber warning flags similar potential issues, although forecasters are expecting the stronger winds to arrive slightly later in the day – it’s in place between 6am and 8pm.
Among the cities affected are Portsmouth, Brighton, Canterbury, Southampton, Plymouth, Exeter and Truro.
Both warnings say people should be alert to the danger of flying debris, which could pose a danger to life.
They join an array of yellow weather warnings which will affect every country in the UK tomorrow as Storm Ciarán arrives.
Met Office deputy chief meteorologist Chris Almond said: ‘Heavy and persistent rain will fall on to the already saturated ground, bringing a risk of further impacts such as flooding in areas that are already struggling to clean up from the heavy rainfall we have seen over the last week or so.
‘There are possible gusts of 80 to 90mph in some exposed southern areas.’
He added: ‘It’s probably quite a nasty storm, this one.’
