‘The reality is’ – Postecoglou gives an honest assessment to his Spurs start
Ange Postecoglou has insisted that Tottenham can come through the tough period that they are currently going through as a much stronger outfit.
Things appeared extremely rosy for Postecoglou and Spurs until a couple of weeks ago, with the Lilywhites being discussed as potential title contenders after winning eight and drawing two of their first ten Premier League games (Sky Sports).
However, plenty of criticism has been levelled at the side following the back-to-back losses against Chelsea and Wolves, with some pundits now suggesting that they will miss out on a top-four spot (talkSPORT).
Postecoglou is keeping a calm head at Tottenham
Postecoglou has insisted that there was an overreaction to Spurs’ impressive start, just as there has been one for their last two defeats.
The Australian told Optus Sport: “I was trying to explain to someone, you look at the start of our season: 12 games, lost two, two points off top. Pretty good start to the season.
“Or you can say we lost the last two, we’re down on numbers, the season is unravelling, everything is a disaster. The reality is it’s somewhere in between.
“We have had a decent start which has been great. There’s been a major transformation in the way we’re playing, training, staff-wise, new players. All those kind of things.
“You don’t know how quickly those dynamics will fit into place. I’ve been really pleased with how the guys have embraced that. The challenge is never-ending.”
Postecoglou pointed out that until that disastrous 20-minute spell at Chelsea, where Spurs lost key players to injury and suspensions (following their red cards), things were going extremely well for his side.
The 58-year-old remarked that navigating this difficult period will help lay the foundations for sustained success in the future.
He added: “It all came in 20 minutes in one game, we started so well against Chelsea and you think ‘we’re flying!’ but the football always does that, mate.
“I think the important part is…you don’t want those periods to come, but when they do come is when I can have the most impact. All eyes are on me: what I do, what decisions I make, how I talk, how I behave. Internally, externally – everyone is looking.
“As much as you don’t want to be in these situations, bizarrely I really enjoy it. Because I know what strong beliefs I have in the way I want to do things and now everyone will look and see exactly what I’m all about and what I want players, staff.
“If we can navigate this period like I have done at other clubs it becomes an important foundation and learning tool for what we want to become.”
Spurs Web Opinion
The blistering start we have made to the season means that we will not be out of contention for a top-four finish even if we have a poor run of results until January.
If we can somehow come through this spell relatively unscathed, the side will have a new lease of life when Maddison and Van de Ven return to action in January.
