Ex-conservative judge forms task force to uphold the judiciary and the law in Trump era
Freedom and democracy in the U.S. are being threatened by Trump 2.0, and a conservative judge says it's going to take all hands in many sectors to prevent its demise.
Michael Luttig, a retired federal judge and one of the nation's leading conservative legal minds, advocated for a widespread effort by every civic group, business, sports team, and community leader to take stock and determine what failsafe measures they can do to protect the nation's life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
As an example, Luttig announced that he and others are preparing for their own effort with other legal experts on both sides of the aisle to fight for the American judicial system.
"The causes of our times are America’s Democracy and Rule of Law, and American Bar Association President Mary Smith @ABAPresident has convened a blue-ribbon Task Force for American Democracy to steady, protect, and preserve our faltering democracy in the years ahead," reads a tweet by Luttig.
"The almost 1.5 million lawyers in the legal profession are uniquely positioned and uniquely obligated to preserve, protect, and defend American Democracy and the Rule of Law," he explained.
His statement was later retweeted by Smith.
"The Task Force comprises 32 leaders of the national effort that has been underway to strengthen the bulwark of our democracy, and the Members of the Task Force are collectively some of the country’s most respected, articulate, and passionate defenders of American Democracy," Luttig continued.
The first Task Force, he said would "inspire and mobilize America’s legal profession to support and defend American Democracy and the Rule of Law." And further, it will "ensure lawyers are educated and held accountable for their professional obligations to support and defend our Democracy and Rule of Law, leverage the legal profession to educate the public on the reasons for, and the importance of, our Democracy and the Rule of Law."
They should then work to "bolster voter confidence in elections by safeguarding the integrity and non-partisan administration of elections," he said.
Finally, the Task Force must "encourage the civic engagement and civil discourse that are vital to our democracy, and ... encourage citizen participation in democracy and the democratic process."
Over the summer, Luttig went on record with PBS to call the 45th president a major concern should he be voted into becoming the nation's 47th president. He was also a speaker during the House Select Committee hearings on Jan. 6 as a conservative voice opposing the attempt to overthrow the 2020 election.
"Donald Trump and his allies and supporters are a clear and present danger to American democracy," he said.
Last month he spoke to MSNBC: "It’s evident that the former president and his allies are going to prosecute that war against democracy to its catastrophic end, and if the former president were to be elected, again, to the office of the president, then I believe that that would be regrettable, for American democracy and the rule of law."
What's more, Luttig is convinced that The Donald has already committed damage that's irreversible, saying, "Never again will the world be inspired to — by America and America's democracy in the way that it has been for — since our founding almost 250 years ago."
