I’m a lawn specialist – my 3-ingredient DIY mix will kill any weed… and for £1.68 it’ll last you months
A GARDENING pro has shared a top tip for getting rid of unwanted weeds in your garden.
As the days begin to get longer and the temperature starts to climb, you may find yourself spending more time in the garden.
After a long winter of neglect, you may have noticed that weeds have started to grow in places that you do not want them.
However, do not fear as a lawn specialist has has shared a simple fix.
Posting in the Gardening Hints and Tips Facebook group, the gardening whizz offered a solution to those who have been “having trouble with weeds”.
He said that all you need to get rid of them is:
1 2 gallon watering can,
2 x 1 litre bottles of white wine vinegar
3 table spoons of salt
3 table spoons of washing up liquid
Salt can be purchased from Tesco for 27p, whilst washing up liquid is 62p from Sainsbury’s and white vinegar can be found in B&M.
This means that to make the mixture, it will cost you just £1.68.
What’s more, you only need a tiny amount of each product to make the weed killer, meaning that the ingredients will last you for months.
Simply mix all of the above ingredients into a plastic spray bottle and spray it on the affected area.
However, the gardening pro, who said he is a ‘licenced professional pesticide sprayer of 20yrs’ warned that you should not use this products on the lawn, or near any plants that you do not want to kill, as the weed killing mixture will kill all plants it hits.
Salt is a great natural alternative to toxic weedkiller.
It works by increasing the levels on ions in the soil and increasing osmotic pressure, which means the weeds will be unable to absorb water and will dry out.
White vinegar works in a similar way, as the acidity of it breaks down cell walls and removes moisture from weeds.
Washing up liquid does not work on its own to kill weeds but improves the effectiveness of the formula by holding the salt and the vinegar on the weeds.
The post was flooded with responses from gardening fans sharing their thoughts.
One person said: “So nice to hear from a professional who is kind enough to share his professional experience in dealing with weeds.”
A second warned: “Make sure that bees and beneficial insects don’t go on plants sprayed with a homemade weed killer containing washing up liquid or similar as it can harm them.”
A third person said: “Some great advice”.
