Two CT women accused of lying, fraudulently obtaining $5K each in SNAP benefits
Two Connecticut women were arrested and charged with stealing over $5,000 each in SNAP benefits in unrelated incidents, officials said.
Carmen Rentas, 33, of Willimantic, and Cardie Dorvil, 29, of Tolland, were arrested by inspectors from the Statewide Prosecution Bureau of the Office of the Chief State’s Attorney on separate warrants and each was charged with first-degree larceny and two counts of second-degree false statement, according to the Connecticut Division of Criminal Justice.
The Connecticut Department of Social Services investigative division submitted the arrest warrant applications for Rentas and Dorvil, the DCJ said.
Rentas allegedly received $5,364 in Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits that she was not entitled to from Aug. 25, 2022 through July 31, 2023, according to her arrest warrant affidavit.
Investigators allege that Rentas underreported her income and failed to report a legally liable relative along with their income to receive SNAP benefits, officials said.
“Rentas signed and submitted SNAP documents, which included information that Rentas knew was not true and intentionally misled Connecticut Department of Social Services employees,” according to the DCJ.
Rentas has been released on a promise to appear and is scheduled to appear in Danielson Superior Court on April 17, the DCJ said.
Dorvil allegedly received $5,920 in SNAP benefits that she was not entitled to from April 1, 2023 through Nov. 30, 2023, according to an arrest warrant affidavit.
Dorvil allegedly failed to report income to receive SNAP benefits, officials said.
“Dorvil signed and submitted SNAP documents, which included information that Dorvil knew was not true and intentionally misled Connecticut Department of Social Services employees,” according to the DCJ.
Dorvil has been released on a promise to appear and is scheduled to appear in Rockville Superior Court on April 9, the DCJ said.
