Orange dinosaur at mini golf course saved from extinction

TheRepublic.com

SAUGUS, Mass. — The giant orange dinosaur seen by thousands of motorists a day on a Massachusetts highway has been saved from extinction. Some feared the 20-foot dinosaur in Saugus would disappear because the miniature golf course on which it has stood since 1958 was sold to a developer who plans on building apartments, a

Brush up on pioneer history at these three state parks

Three of Nevada County’s state parks let you imagine life unfolding between the mid-19th century, when the first pioneers crossed the Sierra in search of new beginnings, to the mid-20th century, when the county’s last big gold operation closed. Nevada County’s wine scene emerges

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

Winery tourism is increasingly popular in the up-and-coming Sierra Nevada region, with more organized events like the Sierra Vintners Regional Wine Trail open house and festival taking place Saturday, Sept. 24. Wineries such as Double Oak, Sierra Sky and Solune host food and wine samplings, and the event is so popular that the vintners’ group is planning similar open houses for next spring and summer. Part of the appeal of these festivals is the homespun mood, where winery owners and winemakers are on hand for meet-and-greets. Читать дальше...

The Pentagon wants an 'aerial dragnet' to find enemy drones on the battlefield and in US cities

DARPA

The Pentagon's research and development outfit wants to stop "UAS-enabled terrorist threats" with a new system it's calling Aerial Dragnet that would track slow, low-flying drones — or what the military calls unmanned aerial systems (UAS).

"As off-the-shelf UAS become less expensive, easier to fly, and more adaptable for terrorist or military purposes, U.S. forces will increasingly be challenged by the need to quickly detect and identify such craft," the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency said in a news release. Here's what the weather is like on Jupiter, where violent storms are routine

BusinessInsider.com

NASA/ESA

One of the most obvious facts about the gas giant Jupiter is its immense size. With a mean radius of 69,911 ± 6 km (43441 mi) and a mass of 1.8986 × 1027 kg, Jupiter is almost 11 times the size of Earth, and just under 318 times Earth’s massive. But this “go big or go home” attitude extends far beyond the planet’s size.

When it comes to weather patterns, Jupiter is also an exercise in extremes. The planet experiences storms that can grow to thousands of kilometers in diameter in the space of a few hours. Читать дальше...
