Teacher probed for affair with underage girl
The KZN education department is investigating claims that a teacher has been living and sleeping with one of his pupils.
|||Durban - The KwaZulu-Natal education department is investigating claims that a teacher at a remote school in the province’s far north has been living and sleeping with one of his pupils, who is a minor.
Spokesman Muzi Mahlambi said officials had visited Khoza High School on Tuesday following complaints raised about the teacher.
“It is a matter we are investigating. We got activated yesterday (on Tuesday) and the officials went there.”
He said that if the allegations were found to be true the department would take action against the teacher.
On Tuesday, DA spokesman Hlanganani Gumbi said that the party had opened a case of statutory rape at the police station in Pongola.
Gumbi said there were claims that the teacher had numerous affairs with underage school girls, inflated poor marks and had been drinking at a local tavern with pupils.
He said that the principal had informed the education department and the school governing body.
“Ongoing pressure from parents and a written statement from the learner stating that she had been having an affair with her teacher saw him suspended from the school on 7 August,” said Gumbi.
However, the suspension had prompted protests from pupils and the teacher had applied for a transfer from the school.
Gumbi said that the department needed to have a child protection register, to insure teachers caught abusing pupils were not hired at another school.
