Smoke from out-of-control Canadian wildfires drifts across U.S. skies

Parts of the U.S. are now seeing smoke from out-of-control wildfires burning in western Canada, spurring air quality alerts in parts of many central and western states. Experts warn the smoke will shift further east to places like Chicago and St. Louis and could linger for days. Chris Stockdale, a wildland fire research officer with the Canadian Forest Service, has more.

Bill Barr says Trump's classified documents case is his biggest legal risk

In an interview Thursday with CBS News senior investigative correspondent Catherine Herridge, Trump-era Attorney General Bill Barr says he believes former President Donald Trump will be "very exposed" legally if he was playing "any games" with the documents marked as classified that were kept at his Mar-a-Lago estate. Barr also said he thinks special counsel Jack Smith could arrive at charging decisions in the Trump investigations as soon as this summer.

Inflation putting 3 out of 5 Americans in financial strain, poll finds

A new Gallup poll finds 61%, or three out of five Americans, are suffering financial strain as a result of rising prices. Nearly half of those polled described the hardship as moderate. But 15% say the price increases have severely affected their ability to maintain their standard of living. Dana Peterson, the chief economist for the business research organization The Conference Board, joined CBS News with more.

New York City lost one of its most beloved celebrities this week with the passing of Pale Male, a red-tailed hawk who had delighted flocks of rapt fans since he began nesting on a Fifth Avenue co-op's ledge across from Central Park in the mid-1990s.
