[Men's Wrestling] Men's Wrestling Hosts Conner/Oppenheim Doane Open
Doane Men's Wrestling hosted the Conner/Oppenheim Doane Open on Saturday inside Fuhrer Field House. With more than 400 wrestlers in the meet, the Tigers brought home eight Top Six finishes between the Open and Amateur Divisions.
Doane had 11 wrestlers compete in the Open Division, picking up a combined 24 wins. In the 125 bracket, Nathan Rizek (JR/Lincoln, Neb.) picked up one win with a pin in 1:39 over William Penn's Dylan McConville. In the 133 bracket, Devin Avedissian (FR/Temecula, Calif.) won three matches on the day. He opened with a tech fall win, 16-0, over Central Christian's Jakarion Fontenot. He then defeated No. 14 Kolby Encinas of Oklahoma Wesleyan by a 3-1 overtime decision. Following two losses, he took on NCAA Division II No. 23 Jordan Kelber of Nebraska-Kearney and picked up a 3-2 win.
Ben Miller collected three wins in the 141 bracket. He had a 23-8 tech fall win over Hector Diaz of William Penn to open the day. He added an 11-4 decision over Grand View's Cameron Clark and a pin of Central Christian's Alexander Perez in 41 seconds.
In the 149 bracket, Nate Lendt (FR/Des Moines, Iowa) advanced to the championship as he went through a gauntlet of Grand View wrestlers. He opened with a win by pin in 1:04 over Sam Kallem. In his second match, he won by a 10-3 decision over Blake Haney. The semifinals pitted Lendt against Jack Latimer where he posted an 11-5 win. In the finals, he went to overtime before dropping his match against Blake Gonzalez, 3-1.
Benjamin Dobler (SO/Torokszentmiklos, Hungary) won four matches on the day for the Tigers in the 165 bracket. He opened with a pin in 4:07 over Weston Milnes of Indian Hills. After dropping a match, he defeated NAIA No. 22 Kaleb Bigelow of Dakota Wesleyan, 8-3. He followed with another 8-3 win, this time over Grand View's Jack Ervien. He closed the day with a medical forfeit win.
Michael Scarponi (JR/Temecula, Calif.) finished with one win on the day at 174, defeating Jensen McDermott of Benedictine, 5-1. Garrett Cornwell (SR/Albion, Neb.) picked up two wins at 184, defeating Orlando Rosa of Jamestown by pin in 2:37 and topping Richard Jordan of Benedictine by forfeit.
At 197, Bradley Antesberger (SO/North Pole, Alaska) advanced to the championship match. He opened with a 10-3 win over Grand View's Elijah Davis. In his next match, Antesberger defeated John Schuttler of Graceland, 12-1. He added a narrow decision in the semifinals, defeating Jayshon Hines of Northwest Kansas Tech, 1-0. In the finals, Brett Mower of Iowa Western picked up a 3-1 overtime win over Antesberger.
Brandon Antesberger (JR/North Pole, Alaska) finished with four wins on the day for the Tigers. He defeated Ross Via of William Penn by pin in 2:43. He followed with an overtime victory over Trevion Sample of Dakota Wesleyan, 3-1. Antesberger faced another William Penn wrestler as he defeated Cameron Mitchell, 19-0. In the fifth place match, he defeated Grand View's Jaden Davis, 3-1.
In the Amateur Division, the Tigers collected 29 victories from 16 wrestlers. Russell Nickerson (SO/Quincy, Calif.) won four matches on the day in the 125 bracket, three coming via pin. He pinned Adonis Lattimore of Nebraska-Kearney, Kentrell Delaney-Kinney of Indian Hills, and Bryce Karlin of Concordia. His final victory was by medical forfeit. Landon Stocks (SO/Winterville, N.C.) picked up a win over Jason Bias, who wrestled unattached, by pin in 3:53. Arian Alai (SO/Omaha, Neb.) collected two wins, defeating Denias Johnson of Graceland by pin in 2:29. He added a win over Austin Kaalekahi of Ellsworth CC by a 13-0 margin.
In the 133 division, Roberto Cordova (FR/Rio Rancho, N.M.) and Tristen Brown (FR/Sugar City, Idaho) each collected two wins. Cordova defeated Riley Harger of Graceland, 14-11, and Drew Lugafet of York, 13-3. Brown had wins over Thomas Iveey of Concordia and Dalla Dunn of Iowa Western, both by pin.
Quentyn Frank (FR/Kearney, Neb.) collected four wins on the day at 149, all via a different outcome. He topped Patrick Campbell of Indian Hills by pin in 1:23 and followed with a win over Coby Tillery of Benedicine by tech fall, 16-1. He added a 6-4 decision over Cael Lynch of Baker and a 16-7 major decision over Daryl Easterling of Benedictine.
Finishing with three wins at 165 was Cooper Spaulding (FR/Martell, Neb.). He opened with a pair of wins, defeating Jeraimiah Nyberg of Graceland, 9-5, and Rylee Walborn of Saint Mary, 9-1. He added a 12-4 win over Lleyton Hoover who was wrestling unattached.
In the 174 bracket, Terungwa Unongo (SO/Jonesboro, Ga.) picked up a pair of wins. He posted a come-from-behind win over York's Shawn Pierre. He trailed 6-3 before rallying for an 8-7 win. Hee added an overtime win over Hunter Nelson of Graceland, 9-3.
Collecting one win apiece in the 184 bracket were Chase Stieb (FR/Loup City, Neb.) and Zaire Ridley (SO/Houston, Texas). Stieb won in overtime, 7-5 over Trystan Rogers of Jamestown. Ridley picked up a medical forfeit win.
Dylan White (SO/Crete, Neb.) finished with two wins for the Tigers at 197. He picked up a medical forfeit win followed by a pin of Gustavo Renteria of Friends in 2:26. Dalton Abbott (SO/Seward, Neb.) won one match at 285, defeating Matthew Lessard of Jamestown, 8-5.
Also in the 285 bracket, Guillermo Duenas (SO/Hesperia, Calif.) advanced to the championship match behind four victories. He opened with a pin of Kase Thompson of Iowa Western in 2:39. In his next match, he defeated Levi Kerner of Nebraska-Kearney by a 10-7 decision. Duenas went to overtime against Dakota Wesleyan's Cole Hennings, winning 3-1. In the semifinals, Eli Noonan of Jamestown fell victim by pin in 1:27. He dropped the championship match, 7-3 to Treyshawn White of Indian Hills.
Next up for the Tigers will be the first home dual of the season as the Tigers take on Midland at 7 PM on Thursday, December 8, in the Haddix Center.
