LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) -- In Scott and Carencro, local high school football players are doing their part to help their communities as severe weather has been predicted for the weekend.

News 10 met with Scott Mayor Jan-Scott Richard and the Acadiana High Rams as they loaded sandbags and helped put the bags in cars.

"To get the kids out here and give back to the community in any way they can. It shows a great outreach, a community outreach on their behalf and, of course, servant leadership, which is always what we're trying to do in this community," Richard said.

The team showed up immediately following team workouts ready to get to work. Shoveling sand into sandbags and loading them into cars as people in need came to the city hall to protect their homes.

Several members of the team spoke to News 10 about the fulfillment they feel from being a helping hand.

"It makes us bigger as people," they said. "You can't be a football team without the team, you know. So, you got to do everything as a team."

Further down I-49, the Carencro High School football team also showed up to help their community. Working as a team to beat the heat, and load sandbags onto a trailer for delivery.

Senior Brennan Cormier says his team will battle the heat as long as needed to help those in his community.

"You know we got a lot of flood areas around Carencro." Cormier said. "So, we're just helping out the community because we're all about the community. That kind of makes me feel good. It makes me feel that I can help other people."

Richard also said it's special to see the future leaders of the community standing together to make a difference.
