LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) -- The 15th Judicial District Attorney Donald Landry is reaching out to the public to raise awareness about fentanyl. Landry's office has secured two of the state's murder convictions related to fentanyl.
"The girl who died is not the only person who had been put at risk by this individual due to his continued sale of fentanyl," Assistant District Attorney (Narcotics) Stephen Williams explained.
Assistant District Attorneys Chase Edwards and Stephen Williams are part of the 15th Judicial District's office narcotics track team.
"Just a few months ago, some fentanyl was found during a search, and the person tried to grab it, and officers tried to grab it; then we had a cloud of fentanyl dust in the air. I believe we had seven or eight deputies exposed who had to go to the hospital and be checked out according to the exposure protocol," Edwards stated.
The fentanyl threat has grown to supersede traditional concerns that plague law enforcement on the job. "Whenever they reach into someone's pocket, because they're being arrested, they have the old fear that they have a needle that's going to stick me. Now the fear is that they have some fentanyl that's going to kill them," Edwards added.
Landry demands it's time to raise awareness, sound the alarm. "Please educate your children. Please tell them that they may think that they're taking a certain drug, and that drug may be laced with fentanyl," Landry said.
The district attorney has organized a team from his office to speak before organizations and businesses about the dangers.
"We offer it to the entire community. If they have an event and they want us to come by and educate them on fentanyl or any other drug, we're more than happy to do that," Landry stated.
