Fans bemoan ‘most underwhelming triple substitution in history’ as Southgate slammed for reshuffle in England vs Brazil
ENGLAND fans have slammed Gareth Southgate for “the most underwhelming” substitutions ever against Brazil.
With the Three Lions in search of a winner Southgate decided to take off talisman Jude Bellingham in the 67th minute.
He was replaced by West Ham star Jarrod Bowen, but it was the other two subs that raised eyebrows most.
Defenders Harry Maguire and Ben Chiwell were hauled off and replaced by Lewis Dunk and Joe Gomez, who made his first international appearance since October 2020.
But with the likes of James Maddison, Marcus Rashford and Ivan Toney on the bench, some fans were left feeling a little short-changed,
Some supporters slammed Southgate for his uninspiring choices, with one claiming he was not trying to win the game.
One fan reacted saying: “The most underwhelming triple substitution in the history of football.”
Another added: “These substitutions? Southgate isn’t aiming to win this game.”
A third wrote: “Dunk, Gomez and Bowen might be the all-time worst triple substitution.”
And another commented: “Those subs are a disgrace. We’re not winning anything with Southgate.”

A few minutes later Southgate turned to his bench and showed a little more ambition, bringing on Rashford.
He also handed an England debut to Manchester United wonderkid Kobbie Mainoo, who replaced Conor Gallagher.
But Southgate’s subs backfired as a misplaced header by Dunk allowed Brazil to break through on goal, with 17-year-old Endrick slotting in a rebound after Vinicius Jr.’s shot was saved to win the match.
