The tweet sent the MotorTrend newsroom into a frenzy: Gas had dropped to $1.36 in Oklahoma City, according to Patrick De Haan, a pricing analyst at GasBuddy. Sure enough, a quick peek at Oklahoma’s GasBuddy page shows prices well below $1.40 all over the city.
Gas prices normally vary all over the country, and the oil price war between Saudi Arabia and Russia was expected to bring pricing down near $2 per gallon. On Friday, the national average hit $2.32, according to AAA’s gas price tracking page, and the average for regular grade in Texas gas dipped below $2 this morning.

Only three states show regular grade above $3/gallon at the time of this writing: California, Washington, and Hawaii. The latter, unsurprisingly, has the most expensive gas in that nation, at $3.53 per gallon for regular. We expect things to change rapidly.
As of yesterday, Midwestern states had seen the largest overall declines over the previous week, according to AAA, ranging from a 9-cent decline in Kansas to a full 16 cents in Michigan. AAA predicts that prices will continue to decline, a spokesperson telling NPR that a $2 national average in the next few weeks is likely if the price war continues. And as De Haan points out below, $2 gas is already a reality (at individual gas stations) in a majority of states.

Whether Americans will see the full benefit of this relief at the pump is unclear, as there are fewer commuters on the roadways due to the unprecedented fallout from the coronavirus pandemic. Employers are shuttering offices and asking workers to telecommute, governments are closing schools and even banning public gatherings. And as you’ve probably already seen, auto shows and racing events have largely ground to a halt—you can see the full list of events cancelled during this outbreak at MotorTrend’s handy but depressing list here.
