Russian embassy ridiculed claims of Russian soldiers in Catalonia
The Russian Embassy ridiculed statements that appeared in a number of Spanish media that the investigation, based on the drying of telephone conversations, concluded that Russian representatives were ready to send 10 thousand soldiers to help the separatists of Catalonia. Russian diplomats wrote about this on the diplomatic mission’s Twitter account.
According to the embassy, information about the arrival of Russian soldiers is incomplete. Representatives of the diplomatic mission joked that it would be necessary to add a few zeros to the number of soldiers. They also noted that, in fact, it was planned to transfer troops on the “Fly” and “Chato” planes, which were collected in Catalonia during the Civil War and were safely hidden until a corresponding encrypted order was received.
Earlier in a Spanish court, there was information about the readiness of Russian representatives to send 10 thousand soldiers to help the separatists of Catalonia. The investigation claims that conclusions about ties with Moscow can be drawn from the wiretapping of two 2018 conversations of the confidant of the former leader of Catalonia, Carles Puigdemont, Victor Taradellas (Víctor Terradellas), who traveled to Russia. He informed the head of the Spanish region that one can count on 10 thousand Russian soldiers ready to defend independent Catalonia.
It is argued that the head of a certain “organization created during the Gorbachev era” was also ready to pay the foreign debt of the new state, but Puigdemont did not agree.
In 2019, the Spanish Supreme Court began an investigation into the actions of employees of a unit of the Main Directorate of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces (better known as the GRU) in the internal affairs of Catalonia.
The referendum on the independence of Catalonia took place on October 1, 2017. Then more than 90 percent of those who voted were in favor of leaving the region from Spain. After that, Puigdemont signed the declaration of independence of Catalonia and called on all countries of the world to recognize it as a sovereign state. The central government tried to interfere with the referendum, using, among other things, forceful methods. As a result of the riots, 893 people were injured. Madrid did not recognize the outcome of this will.
Later, the Spanish Supreme Court found the organizers of the autonomy independence referendum guilty of mutiny and sentenced them to long prison terms.
