Several mines fell near the Russian border detachment in Armenia
According to Kommersant’s sources, several mortar mines exploded near the Russian border detachment located in the Syunik region of Armenia. No harm done.
Syunik region borders on the unrecognized Nagorno-Karabakh Republic and Iran. The border with the latter is guarded by Russian border troops. According to a source in the Russian power structures in Armenia, the fire was fired from the Azerbaijani military, conducting an operation on the territory of the NKR. The Azerbaijani side denies shots directed at the Russian border detachment.
The Public Relations Center of the FSB of Russia (the border service belongs to this department) did not answer Kommersant’s calls.
Earlier, the Telegram channel WarGonzo, owned by the war correspondent Semyon Pegov, reported about the shelling of Russian border guards on the Armenian-Iranian border. “As it became known to the WarGonzo project, the incident took place the day before. Four mines exploded on the territory of the outpost. There is no data on the victims yet, ”he said on Thursday, October 29.
Meanwhile, the Azerbaijani Defense Ministry told reporters: “The news about the allegedly mortar shelling by the Azerbaijani army of the Russian border outpost on the territory of Armenia in the regions bordering with Iran is complete misinformation and is provocative. On the contrary, the Armenian armed forces fired at the territory of Azerbaijan in this direction. Once again we declare that Azerbaijan has no military purpose on the territory of Armenia. “
Let us remind that at present the Azerbaijani troops have regained control over practically the entire southern border of Nagorno-Karabakh and have come close to the state border of Armenia. In recent days, photographs of Russian military personnel on the Armenian-Karabakh border have appeared in Armenian media and social networks. The information about the deployment of Russian border guards there was also confirmed by the Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan, saying that “there is no news in this.”
The basis for the stay of Russian border guards in Armenia is the interstate agreement on the status of the Russian border troops on the territory of the republic, concluded in Yerevan on September 30, 1992. The border department of the FSB of Russia in Armenia includes four border detachments – in Gyumri, Armavir, Artashat and Meghri, as well as a separate checkpoint “Armenia” at Yerevan Zvartnots International Airport. The maintenance of Russian border guards in the country is provided by the governments of the two states approximately equally.
