Reuters announced the suspension of trials of the Russian vaccine against COVID-19
According to Reuters, vaccination of new test participants was stopped due to a shortage of the drug. The head of NITsEM Alexander Gintsburg said that the tests of “Sputnik V” are ongoing and there is no shortage of vaccine
Vaccination of new volunteers during post-registration clinical trials of a vaccine against coronavirus infection COVID-19 (Sputnik V) in Russia has been suspended, Reuters reported. According to the agency, the reason for this was a shortage of the drug.
A spokesman for Crocus Medical, a company that helps test the vaccine, told the agency that the demand for Sputnik V is “colossal” and there is not enough vaccine to cover it.
According to Reuters, vaccinations for new test participants are scheduled to resume around November 10.
Employees of eight Moscow clinics where the vaccine is being tested have confirmed the suspension of its administration to new test participants. At the same time, some interlocutors of Reuters also said that they do not receive enough vaccines.
Metropolitan Department of Health did not respond to Reuters request, National Research Center for Epidemiology and Microbiology. N.F. Gamaleya (NICEM), where the Sputnik V vaccine was developed, in response to a request from RBC, forwarded it to the Ministry of Health. Aleksey Kuznetsov, Assistant Minister of Health, told RBC that vaccine trials are ongoing and the task of vaccinating 40 thousand test participants will be completed.
Later, the head of NITsEM, Alexander Gintsburg, told RIA Novosti that the Sputnik V tests were ongoing and there was no shortage of vaccines.
Earlier, President Vladimir Putin said that Russian vaccines against coronavirus infection are safe and effective, now the country is facing an urgent issue of increasing their mass production. “There are certain problems associated with the presence or absence of a certain amount of equipment -” hardware “, as they say, – for the deployment of mass production,” Putin said.
In mid-October, the head of the Ministry of Industry and Trade of Russia, Denis Manturov, said that by the end of the month it was planned to produce only about 40 thousand doses of Sputnik V in Russia, and in November the production volume would increase only to 800 thousand doses.
Manturov called statements about the possibility of releasing 30 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine in Russia by the end of 2020 as “nonsense.”
The registration of the first vaccine against COVID-19 – “Sputnik V” – Russian President Vladimir Putin announced on August 11. The vaccine is planned to be released into civilian circulation from January 1, 2021.
On October 14, President Vladimir Putin announced the registration of the second vaccine against COVID-19, created by the Vector Center. Deputy Prime Minister Tatyana Golikova noted that the first 60 thousand doses of the new vaccine will be released in the near future, after which Vector will begin post-registration clinical trials in different regions of Russia.
