President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev said that the special status of Nagorno-Karabakh is unacceptable for Baku. Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin noted that the final status of Karabakh has not been settled.
“There can be no question of any status. There is a single Azerbaijan – multinational and multi-confessional, ”said Mr. Aliyev during a trip to Fizuli and Jebrail regions (quoted by TASS).
According to the President, all citizens of Azerbaijan, representing different peoples and religions, live in peace and good neighborliness. “The Armenian people will also live in these conditions,” he added. Mr. Aliyev noted that the Armenian population of Nagorno-Karabakh will have the same rights as the Azerbaijani.
On November 9, an agreement was signed between Azerbaijan and Armenia with the assistance of Russia to end the war in Nagorno-Karabakh. It involves the transfer to Azerbaijan of a significant part of the territory of Nagorno-Karabakh and several adjacent regions. Armenian President Armen Sarkissian stated that it is necessary to return to the Minsk process to determine the status of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic.
More details about the agreement can be found in the Kommersant article “The Only Peaceful Solution”.
