New ARAF President elected
The general director of High-Speed Railways (a subsidiary of Russian Railways), Peter Ivanov, became president of the All-Russian Athletics Federation (ARAF). He was elected president of the federation for a four-year term.
73 delegates to the ARAF report and election conference took part in the secret ballot. Mr. Ivanov got 56 votes.
Mikhail Gusev, Irina Privalova, Oleg Kurbatov and Andrey Shlyapnikov also claimed the presidency. Mr. Shlyapnikov withdrew his candidacy in favor of Pyotr Ivanov, and Mr. Kurbatov – in favor of Mrs. Privalova.
Mr. Ivanov is the head of the Russian Triathlon Federation. Over the years, he headed the Federal Passenger Company and Mosgortrans.
Recall that in the summer, Evgeny Yurchenko announced his resignation from the post of President of ARAF. First Vice-President Alexei Plotnikov became Acting.
Mr. Yurchenko has been in office for four and a half months – since February 28. His resignation comes amid a crisis in athletics that has been dragging on since 2015. Due to doping and corruption scandals, ARAF was stripped of recognition.
The Russian organization was fined and faced expulsion from Word Athletics. In August, the funds were disbursed – $ 6.31 million. On August 31, the recovery commission sent to World Athletics a draft action plan for further restoration of the federation’s status.
