Kyrgyz Supreme Court overturns sentence to ex-President Atambayev

The Kyrgyz Supreme Court disagreed with the lower court and overturned the sentence of former President Almazbek Atambayev. Earlier, he was sentenced to 11 years in prison in the case of the illegal release of crime boss Aziz Batukaev.

“The decision of the two previous instances was canceled. The case has been sent to the Pervomaisky District Court for a new trial, ”said a representative of the office (quoted by RIA Novosti).

Almazbek Atambayev was the President of Kyrgyzstan from 2011 to 2017. He was detained in August 2019 during a special operation, he was accused of several crimes. Supporters of the ex-head of state resisted. During the clashes, a special forces officer died, more than 100 people were injured. During the protests in Kyrgyzstan after the parliamentary elections on October 6, the former president was released, but a few days later he was again detained.
