[Men's Basketball] Men's Basketball Uses Team Effort to Defeat Faith Baptist
Des Moines, Iowa – The Grand View University men's basketball team hosted the Eagles of Faith Baptist Bible College on Tuesday, December 5th. The entire Viking roster saw significant time on the court as Grand View defeated Faith Baptist by a score of 96-32. The Vikings improved to 6-3 overall, while the Eagles fell to 2-6 overall.
The Vikings set a tone early as they jumped out to a 25-2 lead. The home team recorded 9 steals in that span. Jordan Brunkow (JR/Ankeny, Iowa) led the charge in that department as he intercepted 4 passes for steals. One of the steals resulted in a thunderous one-handed slam by the junior.
Grand View's fast start allowed Head Coach Denis Schaefer to turn to his bench early in the matchup. This gave the opportunity for reserves and young guys to get more gameplay experience. Kareem Martin (SR/Staten Island, New York) and Drew Johnson (FR/Clive, Iowa) took advantage of the increased role, especially in the first half. Johnson scored 12 points while shooting 4/5 from the field including 2/3 from behind the arc. Martin scored 8 points on a perfect 3/3 from the field.
The Vikings went into the halftime intermission with a 54-13 lead. They shot an impressive 68% from the field and only allowed the Eagles to convert on 23% of their shots. Grand View shared the ball well in the first period, dishing out 14 assists,
Similar to the first half, Grand View took control of the game from the moment the ball was put into play. After a few dominating minutes from the starters, Schaefer turned once again to his bench. Jay Chen (FR/Taipei, Taiwan) scored the ball well in the second half for the Vikings. Chen scored 7 points on 3/5 shooting, including a three-point basket off an inbounds play.
The Vikings finished the game shooting 65% from the field while stifling the Faith Baptist offense as well. The Eagles shot 21% from the field in the contest. Grand View forced the Eagles into 31 turnovers.
Keys to the Game…
The Vikings were able to turn to their bench early in the game and provide an opportunity for their reserves and young players extended in-game experience.
Grand View assisted on 27 of their 38 made field goals.
The Vikings were outrebounded 41-34 overall and 20-1 on the offensive end.
Players of Note…
Drew Johnson led the Vikings in scoring. The freshman scored 16 points on 5/8 shooting. Kareem Martin (13) and Jay Chen (10) also scored in double figures for the home team.
Dallas Meinders (FR/Walnut Grove, Missouri) produced a solid all-around game for the Vikings. He scored 8 points, gathered 5 rebounds, and dished out 6 assists.
Carter Milam (SO/Bettendorf, Iowa) paced the Vikings in rebounds. Milam snatched 7 boards on the night.
Jordan Tanner (SR/Houston, Texas) collected 3 blocks on the evening. Grand View had 8 as a unit.
