Jakarta (dpa) - Indonesian President Joko Widodo warned on Thursday that the United States‘ "unilateral" recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel could threaten world peace. "Indonesia calls on the United States to consider withdrawing the decision," said Joko, the leader of the world‘s largest Muslim-majority country."Such unilateral recognition violates various resolutions of the UN Security Council of which the United States is a permanent member," he said. "It could also shake global stability." The president said he had ordered his Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi to summon the US ambassador in Jakarta to convey Indonesia‘s stance on the issue. The president said Indonesia would continue to stand by Palestinians in their struggle for nationhood. Indonesia has long been a staunch supporter of the Palestinian cause. The South-East Asian country has given training to thousands of Palestinians in the field of tourism, agriculture, policing and construction. In 2015, a hospital built using money donated by Indonesians began operating in the Gaza strip. Haedar Nashir, the chairman of Indonesia‘s second-largest Muslim organization, Muhammadiyah, warned the move by US President Donald Trump showed that the US was not a fair arbiter in the Middle East conflict."The decision will certainly not create a condition that is conducive to peace," he said. "On the contrary it will stoke the conflict further." "The United Nations should make sure that such a reckless plan [to move the US embassy to Jerusalem] will not go ahead," he said.
