SIDEBAR Over 200 deportations from Germany cancelled over pilots' objections

Berlin (dpa) - Deportations of failed asylum-seekers from Germany regularly have to be cancelled due to objections from pilots or the airline due to transport them back, according to official figures. In the first nine months of the year, 222 planned deportations did not go ahead, the Interior Ministry said in response to a parliamentary question.Overnight, Germany carried out the latest of eight flights, carrying 27 Afghans and 28 Pakistanis deportees. The issue is a controversial topic in a country that has seen the arrival of over a million asylum-seekers since September 2015, with many failing to have their applications approved and sent back to their country of origin. In 85 cases, the flights involved Lufthansa or its subsidiary Eurowings, according to the government figures. The airport that saw the most failed deportations was Frankfurt. The figures also revealed that some 311 deportations had to be stopped because the deportees had objected to the proceedings. It was not specified whether there was any violence involved in these cases. The security costs of the deportations had reached nearly 4 million euros (4.7 million dollars) from the beginning of the year to 30 September, the data showed.
