Giants discussing deals for Reds’ Billy Hamilton, Marlins outfielders

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. — On Tuesday afternoon, word spread through the lobby of the Disney Dolphin Hotel that outfielder J.D. Martinez was coming to the winter meetings to visit teams that might want to sign him.

Asked if the Giants had a meeting scheduled with Martinez, the best free-agent hitter on the market, Giants general manager Bobby Evans thought for several seconds before saying, “Maybe.”

Evans was not trying to be coy, but rather did not want to run afoul of rules that prohibit teams from publicly declaring whom they will or won’t sign.
