Senate probes alleged brutality by SARS operatives

The Nigerian Senate has commenced an investigation of the special anti-robbery squad (SARS) following the widely publicised campaign for the squad to be disbanded.

The upper chamber on Tuesday, December 12 directed its committee on security to look into the allegations of brutality against SARS operatives and present recommendations within two weeks, The Cable reports.
The Senate’s order was sequel to a point of order raised by Senator Isa Misau, a former police officer, demanding a comprehensive investigation into the activities of the squad.
Misau had called on the Senate to look into the complaints of extra-judicial killings and brutality against the operatives.
Contributing to the matter, Senate president, Bukola Saraki, advised the committee on security to quickly find a solution to this problem.

Meanwhile, as the #EndSARS protests continue all over Nigeria, 32 officers of the Special Anti-robbery Squad (SARS) have been arrested and are currently under investigations for various cases of misconduct.
The officials, according to a report by The Cable, are locked up in various cells in Abuja and have not been allowed to see their families or lawyers.
A source claimed that the order for the officers to be arrested and transferred to Abuja came from the inspector general of police, Idris Ibrahim.
The 32 officers, all male, are being detained for various kinds of misconducts including extortion and assault.
