Prosecutor says 3 soccer officials made fortune off bribes

NEW YORK (AP) — Three former South American soccer officials charged in the FIFA corruption scandal made a fortune off bribes in exchange for rigging the process for awarding lucrative commercial contracts to the sport's biggest tournaments, a prosecutor said in closing arguments at their U.S. trial.

The high-ranking officials "took money for themselves instead of putting the interests of the soccer organizations first," Assistant U.S. Attorney Kristin Mace said Wednesday in federal court in New York.

On trial are Angel Napout, the former president of Paraguay's soccer federation; Manuel Burga, the former head of Peru's soccer federation; and Jose Maria Marin, the former president of Brazil's soccer federation.
