Robbers in police uniform attack motorists in Lagos

An attempt by some robbers dressed in police uniforms to steal a Toyota Camry and a Toyota Corolla from some motorists on the Lekki-Epe Expressway was foiled by operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) of the Lagos State Police Command.

The Punch reports that the operation by the robbers occurred on Sunday, December 31, 2017, on the Lekki-Epe Expressway.
The hoodlums posing as policemen were said to have flagged down the motorists on the expressway before other members of the gang reportedly emerged from hidding and held the victims hostage.
However, RRS operatives, who were on patrol confronted the robbers before they could steal the vehicles.
The police said the suspects fled into the bush, abandoning the vehicles and a toy gun.
"The robbers fled into the bush and abandoned the victims and one of their improvised guns. They were chased into a bush, but no arrest was made.
“The victims disclosed that two of the robbers posed as policemen before another two, who were lurking in the bush, came out, asking them to surrender their keys. They added that they were going to Epe to celebrate the New Year,” the police said in a statement on Monday, January 1.
Confirming the incident, the Lagos state police spokesperson, SP Chike Oti, said the command would intensify patrols along the highways for the safety of residents.

Meanwhile, reports in Rivers state say at least 15 people have been killed in an attack by a group of gunmen.
The attack took place at in Omoku, Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni local government area of the oil-rich south-south state.
The Punch reports that the attackers raided the town in the early hours of the New Year day.
The assailants are suspected to be working for a former militant leader Don Nwanee, the report said.
