Old and new music in 3 dimensions

Music created and stored on magnetized reels still has a certain historic allure even after years of technological advances. But the San Francisco Tape Music Festival’s name only hints at the scope and variety of the works on offer each year.

This weekend’s lineup of “audio art” and “fixed media compositions” includes both time-tested classics of the genre and recent work by both local and international composers.

Among the former are Karlheinz Stockhausen’s groundbreaking “Gesang der Jünglinge” from 1956, as well as pieces from the early 1960s by the late Pierre Henry and James Tenney.
