The next “Terminator” film has traveled into the future — slightly — with the sequel-cum-reboot now landing in theaters November 22, 2019.
The Skydance and Paramount film, currently listed as “Terminator 3,” was previously scheduled for release on July 26, 2019.
“Terminator 3” sees creator James Cameron’s return to the franchise for the first time since 1991. He’s producing the film, with “Deadpool” breakout Tim Miller slated to direct. “Captain Phillips” writer Billy Ray has been brought on to polish the script.
Plot details are scarce, but Cameron has said that the film will be a direct sequel to “Terminator 2: Judgment Day,” disregarding the three movies and television series made since then. “[W]e’re pretending the other films were a bad dream,” Cameron told THR in 2017. “Or an alternate timeline, which is permissible in our multi-verse.”
The film will reunite Cameron with original stars Arnold Schwarzenegger and Linda Hamilton, and also act as an introduction of a whole new cast of characters. Notably, Mackenzie Davis is in talks to join the cast.
“A lot of this is handing off the baton to a new generation of characters,” he said. “We’re starting a search for an 18-something young woman to essentially be the new centerpiece of these stories. And then a number of other characters around her and characters from the future. We still fold time in the story in intriguing ways. But we have Arnold’s character and Linda’s character to anchor it.”
