[Baseball] Vanguard's 4-Run Fifth Drops Hawks
COSTA MESA, Calif. — Vanguard University scored all their runs in one inning to defeat the SDC baseball team on Friday afternoon 4-0.
The loss drops the Hawks to 13-23-1 on the season and 8-19 in GSAC play. The Lions improved to 23-19-1 and 18-10 respectively.
SDC left runners in the first four innings but had their best chance of scoring in the seventh. But before that inning, the Lions made due of the fifth inning to beat the Hawks.
Vanguard started the bottom of the fifth inning with the first three batters reaching base safely. A hit by pitch and two consecutive singles gave them the bases loaded with no outs. VU notched a single, sac fly and two more singles to score their four runs.
In the top of the seventh, SDC attempted their comeback. Bobby Mead reached on a pass-ball strikeout and Brock Mosier singled to give the Hawks runners on first and second with no outs. Joel Pedretti hit a sac bunt to advance the runners to second and third.
But with the runners in scoring position, the Hawks were unable to score a run and break the shutout.
Tyler Schindel led the Hawks with two of their four hits. Mead and Mosier were the others who tallied a hit.
Jerry Quemada went the distance allowing 11 hits and the four runs with a walk and seven strikeouts.
The Hawks and Lions will finish their season series tomorrow with a double-header starting at 11 a.m. in Costa Mesa.
