Who needs prospects?
The worst trade to me is too recent and still painful.
The 3-way trade that will haunt Mariners.
I know it already haunts me and it’s only been a year.
Atlanta trades
Shae Simmons and Mallex Smith
Receive Luiz Gohara and Thomas Burrows
Tampa trades
Drew Smiley
Receive Ryan Yarbrough and Carlos Vargas
Mariners trade
Lefties; Luiz Gohara, Thomas Burrows, Ryan Yarbrough and infielder Carlos Vargas
Receive Shae Simmons and Drew Smiley
This trade is such a sad loss. Drew Smiley the prize of the trade never pitched a game for the mariners, and now never will with yet 2 yrs of control at time of injury.
Shae Simmons had 3yrs of control left after this year; so it was possible for the trade not to be a total bust.
Was Hopeful to see Simmons tendered and Smiley retained on a new contract.
With them both non-tendered this easily goes to one of the top worst trades for the Mariners.
Then the other side.
Yarbrough pitching extremely well last year hitting career high in innings pitched.
Carlos Vargas tore it up. Yes only rookie ball but this is a team low on young prospects.
Burrows a nice high ceiling Power multi innings minor league reliever. Of course he was outstanding this year.
Then add in Gohara who was starting in the Braves rotation at the end of last season; and looks like a lock for 2018.
He's was at that time the youngest starter in the majors, & the hardest-throwing lefty (96.0)
Brutal......
