[Volleyball] Lady Bearcats Volleyball Weekend Wrap Up
Brescia University Women's Volleyball team traveled to Bowling Green KY to compete in the Mid-South Conference crossover tournament this past weekend.
The first test for the Lady Bearcats was the Bears of Shawnee State University. The Lady Bearcats took the first set 25-20 but the Bears of Shawnee crawled their way back into the match by winning the second set 25-16. The Lady Bearcats were stunned by the turn of events and refocused to take the third set 25-13. The fourth set the Bearcats jumped out to a lead, but the Bears didn't go out without a fight. With Brescia ahead 24-19 Shawnee State went on a 7-0 run and took the fourth set. The fifth set saw the Lady Bears jump out early and take a 14-9 led late. The Bearcats tried to fight back but came up a little short, losing the fifth 17-15. Brescia fell to 1-5 on the season with the loss.
Brescia refocused for the afternoon match against Cumberland University. The Lady Bearcats did just that and put away Cumberland in three straight sets 25-20, 25-18 and a trilling 29-27 third set.
Brescia ended the day 1-1 making it 2-5 on the year.
Saturday, Brescia first faced the Eagles of Life University. The Lady Bearcats started the first match of the day winning the first set 25-20. Brescia then saw themselves fall behind big in the second set 20-12. "I knew I had to do something so I took a timeout and let the ladies know that they looked like they were just going through the motions. They had no fight in them at all."(Coach Jerry Forbes) After the timeout, the Lady Bearcats went on a 10-3 run but it wasn't enough to take the second set. Life University won set two 25-22.
With the momentum of the run at the end of the second set still fresh in their minds, The Lady Bearcats regained the focus and energy needed to take sets three and four 25-17,25-19. The Lady Bearcats secured their third win on the season beating Life in four sets.
The last match of the weekend was against Pikeville. With the confidence still running high, the Lady Bearcats jumped out to an 11-0 lead against bears of Pikeville. The Lady Bearcats took the first set 25-12. The second set, Pikeville put up a fight but it still wasn't enough to stop Brescia for winning set two 27-25. The Lady Bearcats jumped out to a big lead in set three 10-2, and finished off the Bears of Pikeville with a 25-14 third set victory.
"This was a great weekend. I saw our team grow so much from the first match on Friday to the last point on Saturday. It seemed like on Friday we just couldn't finish but by the end of Saturday we were doing just that. I love these pre conference tournaments. It lets us grow as a team and find out who we are." Stat leaders for the Lady Bearcats for the weekend were Natalie Jones who recorded 77 kills with a hitting percentage of .363. In her match against Cumberland University she had 16 kills on 23 attempts with no errors hitting a blistering .696. She also recorded 45 digs on the weekend. But leading in defense was starting libero Kristin Logsdon, who had 90 digs and a season high 27 in the match against Life University.
The assists leaders were a senior-freshman combo of Alex Satterfield (95) and Brittney Just (91). Brescia will be back in action this Tuesday when they travel to Barbourville to play Union College.
