LA attorney suspected of depositing stolen $1M check

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A former lawyer for convicted ex-rap mogul Marion "Suge" Knight has been arrested on suspicion of federal bank fraud for allegedly depositing a stolen U.S. Treasury check for just over $1 million.

The Los Angeles U.S. Attorney's Office says Thaddeus James Culpepper was taken into custody Monday after being charged last week with one count of bank fraud. A phone call seeking comment from Culpepper's attorney was not immediately returned.

Culpepper allegedly told a bank teller that a client had endorsed the $1 million check to him. The affidavit says the listed payees did not know Culpepper.

Culpepper is also facing charges along with another former Knight attorney of conspiring to bribe potential witnesses.
