Vermont officials hope new trade deal helps dairy farmers

MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) — Vermont officials say a new trade deal between the United States and Canada will help dairy farmers.

Vermont Public Radio reports Vermont Secretary of Agriculture Anson Tebbets is hopeful that the deal reached Sunday night will free up Canadian markets for more U.S. dairy exports. Tebbets adds that more exports "will drive up prices for farmers in Vermont." The United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement, or USMCA, replaces the 24-year-old North American Free Trade Agreement.

U.S. Democratic Sen. Patrick Leahy says he wants to review the agreement. Leahy says tariffs on steel and aluminum that will remain in place are hurting Vermont companies.
