Four suspected German right-wing terrorists in pretrial detention

Karlsruhe, Germany (dpa) - Four men arrested on suspicion of forming an extreme-right terrorist organization in the eastern German city of Chemnitz were ordered into pretrial detention by the Federal High Court of Justice on Tuesday.A total of seven men were arrested on Monday. Three were already remanded in custody on Monday evening. An eighth man, allegedly the mastermind behind the formation of the group known as Revolution Chemnitz, was placed in pre-trial detention on September 14.All eight German citizens and were planning a violent attack on Wednesday, Germany‘s national day, the public prosecutor said.Revolution Chemnitz wanted to carry out armed attacks on foreigners, politicians and journalists, according to investigators, who added that they made efforts to acquire semi-automatic firearms.Several flats and premises were searched in the eastern state of Saxony, where Chemnitz is located, the public prosecutor in the western city of Karlsruhe said on Monday.The searches revealed truncheons but no firearms, according to a report in the Sueddeutsche Zeitung newspaper.The killing of a German man allegedly at the hands of asylum seekers in late August unleashed a series of anti-immigrant protests in Chemnitz, marked by attacks on people believed to be foreigners.Revolution Chemnitz supposedly formed on September 11 at the latest. Following a September 14 right-wing rally in the city, 15 people - who according to witnesses called themselves "citizen vigilantes" - attacked a group of Iranian and Pakistani men with glass bottles and tasers.Some of the 15 suspects in this attack are among those now in custody.The men arrested on Monday are believed to be members of the football hooligan, skinhead and neo-Nazi scene in Chemnitz.
