Agent claims Arsenal want to sign Man United defender
Arsenal are interested in a potential deal to sign Manchester United’s veteran defender Antonio Valencia, according to the player’s agent and father.
The Ecuador international is facing an uncertain future at Old Trafford, with his contract set to expire at the end of the Premier League season.
Valencia hasn’t agreed to a new deal with the Red Devils to suggest that his time at the 20-time English champions could be running out.
Unsurprisingly given his experience of top-flight football in England, Valencia is attracting interest from a host of clubs around Europe.
Now, his father and agent Luis Valencia has confirmed that the 33-year-old will be leaving Manchester United at the conclusion of the current campaign.
“He definitely will not continue in Manchester,” Valencia’s father is quoted as saying by Metro. “He wants a change in the air and the club is not going to renew him either. Like everything in life, everything comes to an end.”
He added: “Arsenal, West Ham, Inter Milan and one club from China are options, but in football everything is changing.
“He wants to choose the best option, but above all he wants to sign a contract for two years. Not for the money, but for peace and hopefully, he told me, be hired by a team that fights for important things.”
Arsenal have signed a number of veteran defenders since the appointment of former Paris Saint-Germain boss Unai Emery as Arsene Wenger’s replacement.
The Gunners signed Switzerland international Stephan Lichtsteiner on a free transfer from Serie A giants Juventus last summer.
Arsenal brought into Borussia Dortmund defender Sokratis Papastathopolous to further bolster their central defence options.
Hector Bellerin is currently sidelined with an injury that is threatening to keep the Spain international for a significant spell.
Arsenal will return to Premier League action with a home clash against Newcastle United on 1 April.
