Pittsburg school official, Paul Shatswell, identified as victim in domestic shooting
PITTSBURG — Authorities have identified the shooting victim in a domestic dispute as Pittsburg Adult Education Center principal Paul Shatswell, who is currently in critical condition and on life support at a local hospital.
Pittsburg Police responded to Shatswell’s home on Barrie Drive at 1:20 a.m. Saturday morning, where they found Shatswell, 45, suffering from a gunshot wound.
“It was later determined during a domestic altercation the man’s wife, 39 year old Maria Vides, shot him with a handgun,” the department posted on its official Facebook page Sunday afternoon.
Vides was arrested and booked into the Martinez Detention Facility for attempted murder, according to the Pittsburg Police Department.
No one else was injured and the firearm was recovered at the residence, according to the Facebook post.
Shatswell graduated from Pittsburg High School in 1992 and became principal of the Adult Education Center in 2018.
“Along with being our Adult Education Principal, Paul was born and raised in Pittsburg and his children attended, and attend, our schools. His impact is wide across our Pittsburg Community,” Pittsburg Unified School District Superintendent Janet Schulze said in a statement Sunday.
The district will have additional counselors on site at the Adult Education Center Monday, and at the schools that his his youngest children currently attend, according to the statement.
“Along with the shock and grief, there will be many memories of his love of music, friends, family, Pittsburg, and his passion for education,” Schulze said.
Shatswell previously worked as a principal for the West Contra Costa County School District, and before that, worked as a software sales executive for Oracle and other companies. He has also served as a reserve deputy for the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Department, according to the school district website.
Shatswell has eight children, according to the district website.
