1 Indonesia flooding: Flash floods and mudslides triggered by days of torrential downpours tore through mountainside villages in Indonesia’s easternmost province, killing at least 58 people and leaving thousands homeless, disaster officials said Sunday. Rescuers recovered bodies as floodwaters and landslides destroyed roads and bridges in several areas of Papua province’s Jayapura district, hampering rescue efforts, said the National Disaster Mitigation Agency. Also Sunday, a 5.5-magnitude earthquake triggered a landslide that hit a popular waterfall on Indonesia’s Lombok island, killing at least two people and injuring dozens. The quake caused a landslide from Mount Rinjani, which hit the Tiu Kelep waterfall located on the active volcano.
2 Sudan protests: Hundreds joined anti-government protests in the capital of Khartoum and other cities Sunday as the Finance Ministry announced it had secured $300 million in loans to address the economic crisis that triggered the unrest. The demonstrations began in December over price hikes and food shortages, and quickly escalated into calls for President Omar al-Bashir to step down, posing one of the biggest challenges yet to his nearly 30-year rule. Security forces have responded with a fierce crackdown that has killed dozens of people.
3 Serbia unrest: President Aleksandar Vucic pledged Sunday to defend law and order a day after opposition supporters stormed the national TV station protesting what they said is his autocratic rule. As Vucic held a news conference in the presidency building in Belgrade, thousands of opposition supporters gathered outside demanding his resignation.
