SEATTLE, July 1 (UPI) -- Beginning Wednesday, Amazon will begin paying its Kindle library program authors by the number of pages read.

Across just one week, starting late last month, eight black churches across America became a different shade of black, each of them charred by flames. Their denominations may be different, but perimeters of police tape temporarily unite them. In Georgia a roof makes way for the sky, in North Carolina a piano sits unrecognisable, and in South Carolina a white cross gleams atop a pile of soot. Among all the ruins, the only thing that remain are unanswered questions.

Layoff announcements at five-year high, Challenger says

Announced layoffs rose to almost 45,000 in June, pulling year-to-date planned cuts to the highest mid-year tally since 2010, according to data released Wednesday by outplacement consultancy Challenger, Gray & Christmas. Employers announced 288,000 cuts during the first half of the year, up 17% from the same period last year. That gain was due to low oil prices, which "rippled through the energy and industrial goods sectors," Challenger reported.
