Gary Oldman brings life to much-enacted personality as Winston Churchill

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

Winston Churchill lived a life that was long and “not … entirely uneventful,” as he once put it, and so it’s only fitting that he should be the subject of movies. Hence, across the veil of years, we have seen tall Churchills, obese Churchills, sloppy Churchills, gross Churchills and scowling bulldog Churchills, and yet not one movie or TV Churchill has come close to giving us the man in full, both in look and spirit, until Gary Oldman in “Darkest Hour.” For viewers interested in history... Cal men endure another season low point in loss to Central Arkansas

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

The Cal men’s basketball team won’t play at home again until Dec. 16. Fans might need at least that long to recover from the monstrosity they witnessed at Haas Pavilion on Wednesday night. Cal was sloppy on offense, lackadaisical on defense and got wholly outplayed in a 96-69 loss to Central Arkansas, a team that moved up to Division I in 2010-11 and was projected to finish 11th in the Southland Conference this season. Cal (3-6), who has lost five of its past six games... Читать дальше...

wildfires of California

Paper Blog

Often the first perceivable difference between village life and city is that of – ‘good clean air’ – we, the city dwellers may not notice that easily, until we read about smog and other pollutants.
We do not have this trouble – that of ‘wildfires’.  Each year, thousands of homes in woodland areas are damaged or destroyed in wildfires that burn millions of acres across the United States, according to the National Interagency Fire Center. Wildfires usually ignite in hot, dry weather and, most often... Читать дальше...

The history of Israel’s contentious ‘eternal capital’

New York Post

President Trump’s announcement that he recognizes Jerusalem as the capital of Israel came 68 years after Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion proclaimed it as the “eternal capital” of the Jewish state. ‘The Other Side of Hope,’ a tale of an unlikely friendship

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

The deadpan irony and seemingly dispassionate air of Finnish director Aki Kaurismäki’s movies certainly aren’t for everyone, but they are a taste worth acquiring. His latest, “The Other Side of Hope,” expands his usual mordant vision of his homeland with a compelling look at Finland’s immigration issue. The film tells two stories that eventually intersect. Wikström (Sakari Kuosmanen) is a disaffected middle-aged salesman who abruptly leaves his wife, wins a pile of money in an illicit... Читать дальше...

Jimmy Butler saying 'What the f*** was that?' is the best new reaction gif

SB Nation: Toronto Raptors

Jimmy was not a fan of that shot.

If your teammates can’t be brutally honest with you, who can? During Wednesday’s game against the Clippers, the Timberwolves had a cushy lead against Los Angeles but a defensive rebound had Taj Gibson thinking, “Hey why not pad this lead even more?”

It’s a long shot, literally, but a fullcourt make to end the half would be an exquisite exclamation point. It ... did not go well. The shot wouldn’t have even counted since it was still... Читать дальше...
