Tottenham beats APOEL in Champions League group play

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

LONDON (AP) — Washing away the pain of last year’s botched Champions League campaign, Tottenham completed this group stage as Europe’s leading team. A 3-0 victory over an ineffective APOEL on Wednesday took the team to 16 points, the highest total of any team this season, and first place in Group H ahead of holder Real Madrid. That’s some progress for a team that could not even make the knockout phase last season, and is only appearing in the Champions League for the third time. Читать дальше...

Lawmakers resist bills aimed at underfunded retiree plans

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Gov. Rick Snyder and top Republican lawmakers on Wednesday were struggling to gain support for bills that would prompt municipalities to better fund their pension and retiree health care plans, as opponents criticized a provision that could ultimately lead to state intervention in communities that are unable or unwilling to act. The Republican governor said appointing "very limited" emergency financial teams in municipalities would only be a last resort to shore up retirement funding. Читать дальше...

Families Across America Can Expect a Tax Cut

The National Interest

Adam Michel

Politics, Americas

Policies in both tax bills would greatly improve America's current, woefully out-of-date tax code.

Bold, pro-growth tax reform reached a major milestone last week. The House and Senate each passed slightly different versions of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. The two versions now head to a conference committee where select lawmakers from the House and Senate will work to hammer out one unified bill that can become law before the end of this year. KHARKIV, Ukraine (AP) — with a 2-1 victory over Manchester City on Wednesday, prompting the Ukrainian club’s coach to attend his news conference dressed as Zorro. Paulo Fonseca appeared in a black hat, cape and mask after his team had ended the English club’s unbeaten record in all competitions this season. Why the Patriot Missile Might Fail America's Military

The National Interest

Joseph Cirincione

Security,

America risks entering into a war with the mistaken belief that it has a shield against the enemy’s missiles when all it has is a sieve.

It turns out that history does repeat itself. The news that the Patriot anti-missile system failed to shoot down a Scud in Saudi Arabia is in November 2017 is exactly what happened when the Patriot system failed spectacularly in Saudi Arabia in the Gulf War of 1991.

Then, as now, the public and officials were misled by quick... Читать дальше...

The Death of the INF Treaty Could Signal a U.S.-Russia Missile Race

The National Interest

Steven Pifer

Security, Eurasia

Can the Trump administration and U.S. allies preserve it?

The Intermediate-range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty marks its thirtieth anniversary on December 8. That could be one of its last. Russia has violated the treaty by deploying a prohibited ground-launched cruise missile. Congress has set the Department of Defense on a course to follow suit. Meanwhile, the silence of U.S. allies in Europe and Asia abets the agreement’s demise.

Congress seems on track to avert weekend government shutdown

Times Union

WASHINGTON (AP) — Despite incendiary words from President Donald Trump, Congress seemed on track Wednesday to approving legislation that would avert a partial government shutdown over the weekend as all sides seemed ready to avert a confrontation — for now. Increasingly confident House leaders planned a Thursday vote on a bill that would keep federal agencies functioning through Dec. 22, and Senate approval was expected to follow. Even the head of the conservative House Freedom Caucus, whose members have been threatening to oppose the measure... Читать дальше...

Black political machine tested again in Atlanta mayor race

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

Atlanta voters woke up to deja vu Wednesday in the racially polarized contest to choose the city's next mayor, with one candidate laying claim to City Hall while the other vowed to seek a recount over a margin of just 759 votes. The Tuesday runoff between Keisha Lance Bottoms, who is black, and Mary Norwood, who is white, split Atlanta practically in half after a vitriolic campaign punctuated by political grudges and allegations of corruption. Unofficial results showed Bottoms leading with 46,464 votes... Читать дальше...

Sinopec USA, a subsidiary of the Chinese oil and gas conglomerate, has sued Venezuela's state oil company PDVSA in a U.S. court, claiming it never received full payment for an order of steel rebar. Are Arms Control Agreements Losing Their Value?

The National Interest

Nikolai Sokov

Security, Eurasia

The sad fate of the INF treaty should serve as a lesson, not as an example.

For a former negotiator, old treaties are like old dogs. They grow feeble and eventually pass away. You watch last years of their life with growing sadness, but know that some things in life are inevitable. The big difference is whether you get a new puppy afterwards or not. The Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty seems to be dying and no replacement is in sight. Читать дальше...
