The other side of the coin

Times of Malta

Allow me to reply very briefly to Salvu Felice Pace’s article ‘When Honesty Shone’ (December 1). It seems there are people who wish to create a mythical figure of the late Daphne Caruana Galizia after her brutal murder. Even projecting the late blogger as some paragon of “honesty”, as Felice Pace has done in his article. Truth be told, there is another side of the coin which Felice Pace and others are trying to make people forget – Daphne’s obsession to try and destroy the career and reputation of those she politically hated. Monitoring bond issuer developments (3)

Times of Malta

In the third article reviewing the financial metrics across the corporate bond market, the two companies operating in the food and beverage sector rank among the strongest bond issuers on the Malta Stock Exchange. In August 2017, Simonds Farsons Cisk plc launched a €20 million bond (the fourth bond issue in its long-standing history) mainly earmarked for the refinancing of the outstanding €15 million bonds which were redeemed at the first optional repayment date of September 13, 2017. The financial... Читать дальше...

Europe’s exchanges keep research buzz alive for small companies

Times of Malta

European stock exchanges expect it to be harder for smaller companies to create a buzz among investors when brokers produce fewer research notes after new rules come into force next year. Some exchanges are so worried about the impact on trading they are offering to pay for the research. Others are pushing companies to pay the bill themselves. Investors often use analysis on a company to decide when to buy or sell a stock. But asset managers are expected to reduce their research budgets when the... Читать дальше...

Graduates’ employment

Times of Malta

The Times of Malta recently presented thePrime Minister’s statements on Malta’s demographic changes. These concerned the increasing influx of foreign immigrants both Europeans and outsiders including North Koreans. Naturally through their employment they gave a strong impetus to Malta’s economic advancement. Good but can our economic and financial leaders visualise the repercussions: if Malta suffers any calamity affecting these workers making them redundant, will Malta follow colonial Britain in discharging masses of workers... EasyJet takes on Lufthansa with German domestic routes

Times of Malta

Britain’s easyJet will start competing with Lufthansa’s airlines on domestic German routes from Berlin next month, following its planned takeover of parts of insolvent Air Berlin, it said yesterday. The budget carrier currently flies from Berlin Schoenefeld airport to destinations outside of Germany, but the Air Berlin deal will see it move into the larger inner-city Tegel airport, previously home to Air Berlin. Along with four domestic routes to Duesseldorf, Frankfurt, Munich and Stuttgart, easyJet... Читать дальше...

A PM addicted to economic growth? - Tony Zammit Cutajar

Times of Malta

While there is little doubt that economic growth is desirable and often commendable, it seems that our Prime Minister is slowly but surely becoming addicted to economic growth. It is now abundantly clear that according to him, increasing our gross domestic product (GDP) should be Malta’s prime strategic objective, notwithstanding the side effects this same growth might have on our present and future quality of life. Politicians, normally not of socialist leaning, tell us that GDP must grow and must grow at all costs. Читать дальше...

Oil hits a low as US fuel stock build signals easing demand

Times of Malta

Oil fell two per cent to its lowest in more than two weeks yesterday after a sharp rise in US inventories of refined fuel suggested demand may be flagging, while crude production hit another weekly record. Government data showed US crude stocks fell 5.6 million barrels, more than expected, which was partially the result of the closure of the Keystone pipeline after a leak in South Dakota in mid-November that cut flows to Cushing, Oklahoma. That line reopened Tuesday. However, gasoline stocks rose... Читать дальше...

After the arrests - Ranier Fsadni

Times of Malta

What should Monday’s arrests change for the government’s law and order critics, assuming the arrests will lead to successful prosecutions for Daphne Caruana Galizia’s assassination? A lot, if you’ve spent the last seven weeks playing an armchair Sherlock and getting it wrong. Nothing, if you haven’t. If, that is, the basis of your criticism has been that the assassination was an illustration of how growing institutional deterioration, for partisan advantage, can have hideous consequences. Weak institutions... Читать дальше...

Apple's growth days are over if it can't sell more iPhones (AAPL)

BusinessInsider.com

AP

  • If Apple's iPhone business is flat -- that means no growth, but no decline, either -- then it can still enjoy growth.
  • But that growth will be much harder to come by, especially considering a large percentage of Apple's non-iPhone business is tied to the fundamentally declining tablet (iPad) and personal computer (Mac) markets.

Apple has been one of the most impressive growth stories in a generation. Over the past decade, the company fundamentally redefined the smartphone... Читать дальше...

Reaction to #TSGPFC: “I’m proud of the performance”

TSG 1899 Hoffenheim (en)

Coaches and players react to the 1-1 draw with Ludogorets in TSG’s final Europa League group game.

Julian Nagelsmann: “Too much went against us today for us to be in with a realistic chance of winning. Their keeper stopped a certain goal by handling the ball outside of the area, while Wanderson played the ball with his hand twice in the lead-up to his equaliser. The referee missed both instances. The youngsters played exceptionally today. If you weren’t aware of the standings, it would have... Читать дальше...
