Men accused of dragging black man to death in 1983 indicted

GRIFFIN, Ga. (AP) — Two Georgia men accused of dragging a black man to his death behind a pickup truck have been formally charged. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that a Spalding County grand jury on Tuesday indicted 59-year-old Frank Gebhardt and 58-year-old Bill Moore Sr. in the 1983 slaying of Timothy Coggins. They face charges including felony murder. District Attorney Ben Coker said at a bond hearing last month that Coggins was killed for "socializing with a white female." PENSACOLA, Fla. (CBS News) — A Florida couple who authorities say left a minor living alone in a trailer without furniture and often without food is charged with child neglect. The Pensacola News Journal reports 34-year-old Jennifer Nichols and 32-year-old Joshua Sanders were arrested Nov. 30. A witness told Escambia County sheriff’s deputies that the couple began renting the trailer in September and she realized at some point that the child was living alone. JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — Police in Mississippi say a teenager has been found inside his vehicle suffering from several gunshot wounds. News outlets report that officers found the 19-year-old man inside a car that was riddled with bullets on Tuesday. Jackson police spokesman Sgt. Roderick Holmes says officers were called to the shooting just after 1 p.m. The unidentified teenager was taken to an area hospital, where he is listed in critical condition. WASHINGTON (AP) — The government says U.S. health care spending reached $3.3 trillion last year, which averages out to $10,348 for every man, woman, and child. The 4.3 percent annual increase actually represented slower growth than in 2015, but health care spending still grew faster than the economy.
